Pre-Employment Medical Exams

Crown St Medical Centre offers specialised pre-employment medical services tailored to your employment needs. Our doctors are specialists in occupational medicine and have completed additional training in the field of occupational health. Our specialists have a detailed understanding of most occupations and the physical requirements of the job roles. Our Doctors can complete most pre-employment examinations on the same day.

Audiometry/Hearing Tests

Our clinic offers screening audiograms as part of pre-employment medicals and as part of a general health check. Our hearing tests meet current Australian standards guidelines and it can usually be performed on the same day.

Urine Drug Tests

Urine drug screens can be performed instantly at Crown St Medical Centre. If a confirmatory test is required this can be performed through our collection centre (Douglass Hanly Moir).

Spirometry (Lung Function Tests) and ECGs

Additional tests such as spirometry to assess lung function and ECGs to assess heart rhythm and heart size are available as part of your pre-employment medical assessment. This is performed by our experienced nursing staff and doctors who can interpret the results immediately.

Functional Capacity Assessments

Our physiotherapists are trained in performing Functional Capacity Evaluations (FCEs). An FCE is often conducted to ensure that an employee is able to safely perform the physical demands of their role. These assessments are designed to prevent workplace injuries and improve health and safety. A series of tests are often performed to assess your level of fitness, physical strength, range of movement, stamina, and lifting and carrying tolerances.

Fitness for Duty Assessments

We have trained physicians and specialist occupational medicine consultants who are experienced in performing Fitness for Duty Assessments and providing medico-legal opinions. A Fitness for Duty assessment is often conducted on employees to assess their ability to return to a specific role. An employer may require a worker to provide a clearance letter from their doctor to return to work. When this is completed by the treating doctor, who is unaware of the inherent job requirements, this may cause health and safety concerns for the worker upon return to work. A Fitness for Duty assessment performed by our specialist doctors is tailored to the individual with the aim of reducing workplace injury.

Independent Medico-Legal Opinions

IMEs are independent assessments undertaken by a medical practitioner to determine an employee’s work capacity, provide advice on treatment, prognosis and disability.
